Managing and Leading

Managers who are good leaders make the biggest contribution to the company.  They do this through inspiring and motivating their teams to increase their contributions.

Not all managers are leaders. Managers, from the first line manager to the “C” suite managers, have operational processes that they are responsible for executing.   And they can faithfully execute those processes on a day-to-day basis without “leading” the people they “manage”.

A good leader appeals to the heart and soul of the organization, and creates an environment required to consistently perform well – motivated and inspired staff.  He or she:

  • Inspires by painting the big picture and issuing the rally cry so the team understands the objective and knows what its going to take to win.
  • Motivates the team by setting the context.  A good leader ensures that all understand their role in the organization, and the value that role brings.
  • Builds the organization: The good leader not only gets the right people on the team, he or she builds their confidence so they can accomplish the task or mission ahead of them.

A leader recognizes that the many contributions of the team far outweigh his or her personal contributions, and works relentlessly to support and motivate the team.
